Using his skills

Date of news/blog: 24th January 2024

Having spent the bulk of his career working in some of the most highly rated restaurants in the world, Alex Thomas is now using his skills in a different way by enhancing the experience of residents, staff, and visitors at our four homes.

Alex works in Regional Business Support for Dormy Care Communities, having decided on a change of career direction.

Until two years ago, he had worked in the hospitality industry, helping to run restaurants in South Africa and London, which include Angela Hartnett’s Café Murano and The Ivy, to name just two.

He then joined our Foxhunters Care Community as Head Chef, before taking up his current role in Regional Business Support.

It’s a wide-ranging role covering everything from data analysis through to supporting the admin teams with HR, payroll, and other day-to-day tasks.

Alex was also instrumental in the launch of our digital reception systems, which have proven very popular within the homes.

And it was this particular project which recently contributed to Alex receiving the Best Progress award from Herefordshire, Ludlow & North Shropshire College, where he is currently undertaking his Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration.

“One of the best things about working for Dormy Care Communities is that they will always find a role to fit in the individual person,” Alex explains.

“In my case, our CEO Helen Davies-Parsons encouraged me to formalise my skills, and this is one of the reasons I decided to undertake the apprenticeship, which I am finding very useful.

“I am in a role which is always evolving, which is great but ultimately it’s all focused on enhancing the experience for anyone connected to Dormy and ensuring we continue to deliver a luxury service for the benefit of the ladies and gentlemen who choose to make one of our care communities as their home.”
