Our very own author

Date of news/blog: 8th May 2024

To have one book published is an amazing achievement but our very own author George Thorn has more stories in him than that.

George already has four published books to his name, the latest one being a work of historical fiction titled ‘Black Hearts Be Damned,’ which imagines an alternative history where Pirates survived made their own government in the Caribbean.

This follows a Western fantasy, science-fiction comedy, and a horror, demonstrating the young author’s versatility when it comes to genre.

George writes his books when he’s not working at Bramshott Grange where he is part of the housekeeping team.

He initially started as carer before switching to housekeeping just a few weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We already had high standards when it came to cleaning, but this was taken to a whole new level when the pandemic happened,” says George.

“We had to make sure the home was kept ventilated as much as possible and I came up with the idea of spraying the doors and would walk around with a motorised back on, which made me look like a Ghostbuster!”

A typical day for George includes cleaning the lounges, rooms, and public areas of the home, as well as helping with the laundry.

“The ladies and gentlemen get fresh laundry delivered every day so it’s just like being in a five-star hotel,” he says.

“I like my job because I still have a lot of interaction with the residents, and I enjoy talking to them and listening to their stories.”

George has plenty of stories of his own too.

He writes every day and self-published, under the name George A Thorn, his first three books via Amazon. His newest book was picked up by a publisher and is available on Amazon, as well as book shops like Waterstones.

George adds: “I started writing when I was at college and there was a lot of trial and error before I got to where I am now.

“When my latest book was released, it was great looking at the numbers go up and it sold out on Amazon on the first day.

“It would be a dream to become full-time author, although I am surrounded by people at Bramshott who provide inspiration and the odd plot point or two!
