Music and travel

Date of news/blog: 21st January 2026

Music and travel have played a big part in Jean’s life and often she has been able to combine the two.

If you have read our Magical Musical Memories book you will know that Jean saw Simon and Garfunkel and Tom Jones play live when she worked in Bermuda and it was on the island where she also discovered her love for calypso music.

Throw classical, choral and country and western music into the mix and you can see Jean has real eclectic tastes, which is perfect now she is at Brockington House because we have a wide range of entertainers, from Elvis impersonators to cellists, who come in and play for our ladies and gentlemen.

Jean is from Stockport by birth and in her professional life was a Radiographer, a job which took her to Bermuda, Canada and back to Hereford where she made her home and where she headed the radiography department at the local hospital before retiring.

After retiring from the NHS, Jean kept busy working as a volunteer at Hereford Cathedral which involved showing people around and talking about its history. She was therefore always the perfect person to turn to on our regular Brockington House trips to the Cathedral!

Jean also enjoys musicals and shows and her longtime friend Linda says it wouldn’t be Christmas for her if she hadn’t gone to Birmingham or Cardiff to take in a performance during the festive season.

Unfortunately, Jean was diagnosed with dementia and after realising she was struggling to cope at home, she made the decision that a care home would be the best option for her. Living in Tupsley and regularly walking her dog past Brockington House, she knew about the home and went to have a look.

Linda picks up the story: “Jean liked it and what impressed me and her family was that on three occasions we visited, each time we were showed around by a different member of staff who all brought their own experience of the home.

“We then met the manager Shann and Jean ultimately made the decision that this was the best place for her.

“She chose well because she enjoys the company and the activities, especially the live entertainment which perfectly suits her love of music.

“Jean enjoyed travelling and has visited countries/continents like Australia, New Zealand, South America where she stayed in nice hotels and she has always liked the silver service dining experience at Brockington.

“She likes a glass of wine with her meal and for her, and her family, Brockington, is practically just like a hotel, so that’s perfect.”
